Workshop - Witch's Brooms

Online workshop with Sam Pratt

January 25 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Witch’s Brooms & Their Horticultural Significance

Discover the fascinating world of witch’s brooms and their role in horticulture with Sam Pratt, a seasoned expert in conifer production and the Manager of Conifer Kingdom & Rare Tree Nursery in Oregon. Sam began his journey in horticulture under the mentorship of Dr. John Albers at Vista Gardens, where he interned for several years. Today, he maintains a close connection with the gardens, where Sam's Conifer Reserve is named in his honor. This engaging workshop offers a unique opportunity to explore the genetic anomalies known as witch’s brooms and their potential to create new ornamental cultivars.

Witch’s brooms are dense clusters of abnormal growth in trees, often resulting from genetic mutations. Some of these mutations are genetically stable and can be propagated to develop new and distinct plant varieties. Sam will demystify the science behind these fascinating growths, explaining how they are collected and propagated, and sharing how they can be introduced into nursery production. The workshop will include detailed explanations and visual examples of witch’s brooms, showcasing their transformation into unique, ornamental cultivars.

Join us for this educational and inspiring remote Zoom workshop to deepen your understanding of genetic mutations in trees and their horticultural potential. Whether you’re a horticulture enthusiast, professional, or simply curious about the natural world, this workshop will illuminate the artistry and science of cultivating new plant varieties.
