John Albers is a passionate horticulturist and environmental steward who has dedicated much of his life to the creation and cultivation of Vista Gardens. As a Research Professor of Medicine at the University of Washington, John’s professional background is complemented by his extensive knowledge in environmental horticulture, landscaping, and sustainability, which he has developed over more than three decades.
John’s vision for Vista Gardens began in 1998 when he and his wife, Santica Marcovina, transformed a two-acre lawn into a lush botanical oasis in East Bremerton, Washington. Over the years, the garden has expanded to over four acres, featuring approximately 1,200 different species and cultivars, including an impressive collection of conifers, heaths, and heathers.
John’s work at Vista Gardens reflects his deep commitment to sustainable gardening and environmental education. He has cultivated a beautiful and diverse garden and through the creation of the Albers Marcovina Vista Gardens Foundation, has taken the steps to ensure that it serves as a living example of sustainable practices, both now and into the future.
John's efforts have been instrumental in preserving the flora and fauna of the region and promoting environmental stewardship through education and outreach.
In addition to his hands-on work in the garden, John is also an accomplished author, sharing his expertise in sustainable gardening through books like “The Northwest Garden Manifesto.” His writings further his mission to inspire others to create and maintain sustainable, biodiverse gardens that enhance urban environments.
John Albers continues to curate and guide the vision of Vista Gardens, ensuring that it remains a place of beauty, learning, and inspiration for future generations. His dedication to both the science and art of gardening has made Vista Gardens a cherished resource for the community and beyond.
The Albers Marcovina Vista Gardens Foundation was established in 2007 by John Albers and his wife, Santica Marcovina, to further their mission of educating and inspiring the public about sustainable gardening practices.
Rooted in the local community, the Foundation supports the ongoing development and maintenance of Vista Gardens, fostering a deeper connection to nature. While its focus is local, the Foundation’s impact reaches a wide audience through educational programs and conservation efforts that promote environmental stewardship and sustainability.
