The Madrona Woods at Vista Gardens is a serene natural area and is home to native Madrona trees, along with diverse plant life that plays a critical role in our garden’s ecosystem. Under the watchful care of John Albers, our founder and garden curator, the Madrona Woods has been studied and nurtured for over 25 years.
John has witnessed noticeable changes in the overall health of the native Madronas, particularly due to environmental stresses and aging trees. We are seeking to rejuvenate the forest area, restore its natural health, and create new spaces for native and near-native plantings to flourish.
“The Madronas here are magnificent trees and a testament to our region’s resilience and beauty. Over time, I’ve seen their struggle, and now is the moment to take action before it’s too late.” -- John Albers
Our goal is to raise $20k in addition to the match pledge of up to $100k (5X) by the end of December to begin the restoration of the Madrona Woods and establish a fund for the continuation of John’s dedicated efforts to improve the areas health and sustainability.

The Work Ahead:
Restoring Madrona Woods is a significant undertaking, and each element of the plan requires resources:
• Removing dead and diseased Madronas to protect the remaining healthy trees
• Clearing excess debris and transforming it into mulch to rejuvenate the soil
• Planting native and resilient species, such as hybrid Madronas, near-native oaks, Manzanitas, huckleberries, and golden currents, to support a biodiverse and balanced ecosystem
Your Impact
Your donation has the power to create lasting change:
• With the 5X match, a gift of $20 becomes $120, which can cover the planting and mulching of new understory plants.
• A $100 donation turns into $600, enough to sponsor the preparation and planting of a new tree in the woods.
✨As a heartfelt thank-you for supporting the Madrona Woods restoration, every donor will receive a special digital guide filled with tips for creating deer-resistant, wildlife-friendly, native gardens—This guide provides valuable insights and practical tips for creating resilient, eco-friendly garden spaces that support local biodiversity.
