Tour: Fall Garden Superpowers

Join us at Vista Gardens on Saturday, September 26, for Fall Garden Superpowers. This will be a lively, interactive exploration of the hidden work plants do and the many ways a garden supports life. 🌿

Discover what plants are doing as summer turns to fall on a guided walk through Vista Gardens. We’ll look for late flowers feeding bees and hummingbirds, fruits and seeds sustaining birds, roots and groundcovers protecting soil, and evergreens providing shelter and year-round structure.

Along the way, we’ll become garden detectives. Our guide will point out visible clues, ask what you notice, and help connect each discovery to a plant’s ecological “superpowers.” We’ll compare smooth and peeling bark, soft and prickly leaves, colorful fruit, unusual flower and seed shapes, fragrant foliage, and the movement and sound of grasses and bamboo. When appropriate, participants may safely smell or touch selected plants under the guide’s direction.

We’ll also discover a few practical and historical ways people use familiar plants—from bamboo garden stakes and traditional heather brooms to culinary and ornamental herbs. Gardeners will leave with ideas for choosing plants that offer more than beauty, while parents and children will enjoy a playful new way to observe, ask questions, and explore the living garden together.

No gardening experience is needed—just curiosity and a willingness to look closely!
